Hi!My son is 15. He is a very slow person generally but specifically very slow in reading, comprehension and writing. He leaves out 10 to 30% of all his exams that need these skills like English, Business and economics. However it doesn’t seem to be a problem in numerical subjects. He is an A - student in Maths , Physics, Computer Science and Chemistry.He is usually able to come to the end of theses tests.What kind of assessments does he need to undergo and how can I help him.Is it possible, he has Slow Processing Speed?Thank youRegardsRadwa

You shall take your son to a special education teacher to conduct a professional assessment to ascertain the nature of your son's condition, which may be called the state of learning disabilities, a disorder caused by neurological factors, which differ when they appear in the degree of learning disabilities, that means there is a problem in academic achievement in Reading, Writing, or Mathematics subjects. To diagnose learning disabilities, your son shall have significant delays in operations without knowing the cause of such delay. It does not appear until after the child has entered school or is discovered during school, as the child academically achieve less than his peers who are of the same age and social, economic and health conditions, where the child has a significant delay in the study skills of reading, writing or Math, the delay in operations is the basic one and in order to judge the child has learning disabilities, then examination must be carried out and take place after the second grade of primary school, when some of these signs appear whether the delay in Speech, linguistic, difficulty in memorizing, having problems in acquiring verbal sounds, decreasing or increasing letters during speech, showing poor concentration or poor memory, difficulty remembering what is required (short-term memory), ease of distraction or straying, losing things or forget it. Scientists believe that these errors or defects in the growth of neurons and may be genetic defects and may be a parent has a similar problem, and it may because of problems happened during pregnancy and childbirth which can be associated with the learning disabilities that the child has before the birth. In some cases, the mother's immune system interacts with the fetus as if it were a foreign body attacking it. This can lead to disability in the brain and difficulty in learning in old age. The umbilical cord twisting may occur around the fetus during childbirth, resulting in sudden oxygen deficiency reaching the fetus leading to disability in the brain and learning disabilities in adulthood. Smoking, alcohol, or some dangerous medications during pregnancy and pollution and environmental problems can also cause learning disabilities for children. To cure learning disabilities, parents should understand the nature of their children's problems and help the school establish a therapeutic program for these children away from psychological tensions. The condition must be diagnosed early and supervised by a psychologist. The therapeutic program should be comprehensive in all aspects of learning, and the resource center is used to deal with these conditions.
