Treatment of the condition depends on the underlying cause ,since irregular periods can be a result of several different mechanisms , to be mentioned later . irregular periods are actually a common complaint , but not all those who complains of some irregularity in their usual periods need investigation , because imenstrual periods are physiologically irregular in the first few years after puberty ,owing to the immature pituitary gland and hypothalamus which interferes with the process of ovulation , so called Anovulatory cycles , however , after 2-3 years normal female body should be able to achieve normal ovulation , and have more regular cycles ,so any variation from the normal range of cycle length , which is between 21-35 days , should be investigated .Generally , we recommend taking as much rest as possible during your periods , drink more water and liquids ,use warm compressors with the painkiller diclofen 50 mg twice or three times daily if any pain present. we also recommend seeing a gynecologist soon to assess your case closely and write you the best hormonal therapy to regulate your periods

Diagnosis

this requires full history and clinical examination , and a full blood count to assess your hemoglobin level , thyroid function test , prolactin level , serum testosterone , serum LH/FSH , and pelvic sonogram to assess your uterus and ovaries

• polycystic ovarian syndrome
