treatment
- Costochondritis is defined as inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the sternum, and it usually has no underlying cause, often it's confused with a syndrome called Tietze which cause the swelling in addition to the pain,that's why we recommend that you consult the doctor to examine you and run the necessary tests,to reduce the pain of costochondritis currently you should do stretching exercises of chest muscles, put warm pads on the chest, avoid strenuous exercises, use NSAIDs such as Naproxen when you have pain, and Gabapentin to control chronic chest pain, and in case that the pain persists the doctor can inject numbing medication directly to the painful area
diagnosis
- based on medical history and physical examination of the chest wall, then running some tests to exclude the causes that mimic the pain such as ECG and cardiac enzymes to rule out cardiac causes, chest x-ray or CT to exclude chest infections or tumors, ESR, CRP and RF to rule out arthritis

- strenuous exercise
- severe cough
- heavy lifting
- rheumatoid arthritis
- ankylosing spondylitis
- infections
- tumors
symptoms;
- sharp pain
- affect multiple ribs
- mainly the pain occurs at the left side of the sternum
- pain worsens when you take a deep breath
