What is the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease?
GERD occurs as a result of a weakness in the valve between the stomach and the esophagus, which causes stomach acid to reflux into the esophagus leading to several symptoms that will be mentioned later. One of the treatments that can be used in such cases is Esmoprazole 20 mg once a day in the morning before meals. It is also recommended to change your lifestyle and start losing weight, avoid foods that increase stomach acid secretion and cause irritation such as hot spices, coffee, caffeine derivatives, and soft drinks. Furthermore, it's advised to quit Smoking, avoid heavy and large meals, especially before bed time as well as avoid lying on your back or sleeping immediately after eating, and you should wait for at least 3 hours. It should be noted that you should raise your head during sleep using several pillows equivalent to 20 cm.
What are the necessary tests for diagnosis?
Clinical medical examination and taking your medical history by a gastroenterologist. Complete blood test to rule out the presence of infections or anemia. An x-ray can be done with dye to image the esophagus, in addition to the use of endoscopy of the esophagus and stomach
