treatment:

  • Raynaud's phenomenon leads to a feeling of coldness and numbness in the extremities such as the toes and fingers, especially in cases of tension and low temperatures, and this occurs due to the narrowing of the small arteries that supply the skin with blood. The treatment depends on the severity of the disease and whether you suffer from other health conditions. For treatment, you must be evaluated by the doctor and run some tests, and then set a treatment plan. In general, it is recommended to follow some tips such as avoiding smoking, exercising regularly, avoiding sudden changes in temperature, and reducing exposure to stress, and it is recommended to wear socks and gloves in cold weather. With the use of some medications such as calcium channel blockers such as nifedipine or amlodipine, but in severe cases, some procedures are resorted to, such as Botox injections or local anesthesia in the limbs, or surgery to remove some small nerves surrounding blood vessels

How is the diagnosis made?

  • The diagnosis is made by taking the medical history, the symptoms that you suffer from, and then conducting a clinical examination, examining the skin at the base of the nail with  the micrroscope to detect any abnormalities in the small blood vessels, and some tests to exclude similar diseases such as the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and antinuclear antibodies test

Factors that increase the likelihood of Raynaud's phenomenon:

  • Women
  • family history
  • cold weather
  • smoking
  • Side effects of some medicines
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Typing on the keys, playing the piano, or making similar movements
  • vascular disease

Our advice:

  • Make sure to warm the extremities, and you can take medications that block calcium channels, but it is preferable to consult an internist to evaluate your condition
