We would like to inform you that the best nutrition methods for diabetic patients are by following a healthy, individualized, organized diet with following-up with the nutritionist at his/her diabetes treatment center, taking into account the following:
-Eat foods which has low and medium glycemic index: Freekeh, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, peas, legumes, lentils, Basmati rice, non-starchy vegetables, carrots, and all fruits types (except watermelon, dates and pineapple).
-Eat five to six meals a day (small and multiple meals): They should contain all food groups from gluten-free starches, milk and dairy products, meat, vegetables, fruits and beneficial fats.
-Eat lots of fresh and cooked vegetables.
-Eat fresh fruits with their peels, instead of fruit juices (it is allowed to eat 2-3 servings of fruits per day).
-Eat foods that are low in fat.
-It should be noted that excessive fat consumption leads to cardiovascular disease, which is the most complex and dangerous disease that results from diabetes, so eat red meat without fat, and it is preferable to replace it with white meat and fish.
-Drink low-fat or fat-free milk and dairy.
-Stay away from fried foods, and use the boiling, grilling or roasting and baking in the oven methods to prepare food.
-Avoid sugar and sweets, or reduce and moderate their consumption: Sugar contains lots of calories, which makes the body gain excess weight and increases the effect of obesity for a diabetic patient, and it also raise the sugar rate in blood quickly.
-Have less salt: since having lots of salt causes the accumulation of water in the body and possibly high blood pressure, which is a complication of diabetes, and avoid as much as possible eating foods preserved in salt and fast foods, as they contain a lot of salt.
-Drink a lot of water: It is preferable to drink 8-10 glasses of water daily.
-A meal before bedtime: It is very important to avoid low sugar level in blood during the night, so a diabetic patient should be careful and eat it, with moderation in its quantity and quality.
