Treatment of amebiasis:
Amebiasis is an infection of the large intestine caused by parasitic infection (Entamoeba histolytica). This infection can be treated by Metronidazole 500 mg three times aday for 7-10 days. Other medications can be used to kill the cysts of the ameba in the intestine such as iodoquinol and diloxanide furoate.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis can be made initially by taking the medical history and clinical examination from the doctor. Complete blood count test to check for infection. Stool samples to be checked in the labs for the presence of E.histolytica. In some cases, colonoscopy can be used to take a tissue sample from the intestinal wall when the diagnosis is not clear.
