Treatment of nosebleeds:
When there is an active bleeding from the nose, it's recommended to press on the soft part of the nose to stop the bleeding by applying pressure with your index and thumb fingers and tilting the head forward for 10-15 minutes until the bleeding stops. If the bleeding does not stop, you should visit the nearest medical center for futher assessment and management that migh include cuaterrization. And then a medical examination must be carried out by an ENT specialist to determine the cause and treat it. If there is a polyp in the nose, it is treated surgically by removing it. If there is a high blood pressure, the pressure level must be regulated by the appropriate medications. Furthermore, brain tumors should be ruled out.
Diagnosis:
If the bleeding continues, you have to do a medical examination and know your medical history by the ENT specialist including measuring blood pressure and examining the nose to detect tumors or polyps using a rhinoscope. An x-ray of the face and brain in case of suspicion of tumors or foreign bodies. PT or PTT examination to rule out clotting problems, in addition to a complete blood test to detect infections, anemia or low platelet count.
Causes of nosebleeds:
- Trauma
- Infection
- polyps
- tumor or a foreign body in the nose
- Hypertension
- Liver problems
- Blood diseases such as thrombocytopenia
- severe dehydration
- brain tumors
- others
Recommendation:
It is recommended to see an ENT specialist for assessment and management.
